//CHARITY PARTNER

“In May 2018, We lost Lewis, just two months after his 19th birthday.

“Without even an inkling that there could have been a health issue, he was gone, leaving a hole that grows daily.

“There are no words that can help when you lose a child, grandchild, brother but the actions of CRY in the immediate aftermath helped our family enormously and helping to spread their word gives us all a purpose.”

// 12 fit and healthy, young people die every week of undiagnosed heart conditions.

As part of this year’s AGM we have decided to support a charity for the forthcoming year.

Cardiac Risk In The Young is no doubt a charity which our members will call upon in the near future as one of the services they offer is free ECG screening for young people aged 14-35. This service is key to identifying any heart abnormalities that our young athletes might have whilst their heart is still developing.

Unfortunately for one of our coaching team, awareness of CRY came too late.

Graeme's otherwise healthy son, Lewis, died in his sleep aged 19 in 2018. Had he been screened, there may have been an early indication of any problems.

In addition to screening, CRY provide many other services. The free counselling to parents affected by the loss of a young family member being one that Coach Graeme highlights as being a HUGE help.

CRY// Preventing young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening and research, and supporting affected families.

Future screening event

We are currently in contact with CRY to arrange a private screening. Our aim is for young aspiring cyclists and athletes from the south-east region to attend, ensuring that as many people benefit from CRY’s Free ECG service and hopefully preventing needless deaths.

The cost for hosting an event is £6,800 which is a tough ask, but one which we think we can achieve.

In order to have a ringfenced fund for a screening event, CRY ask that the fund is setup in memorium of one of the young people to have been affected and so we have setup our fund in memory of Lewis Stewart.

They also ask that before any screening funds can be ringfenced, £3,500 be raised for the charity to achieve their core aims. However, This target has already been met by previous fundraising by coach Graeme (2023's Paris-Brest-Paris ride and his London-Wales-London Challenge which was very generously supported by club members)

So all that remains is the £6,800

How are we going to fundraise?

This is simple.

Used kit auctions; the Limited Edition Cycling Winter Series café and bake sales; Coach Tom’s bike wash service; club session picnics; London Youth Games fundraising; raffles; shaving coach James’ hair; and the list goes on…

There's also the London-Edinburgh-London event in 2025 if anyone wants to go one better than Coach G's Paris-Brest-Paris efforts!

Hopefully our members can think of innovative ways of fundraising and at the same time, the importance of fundraising for good causes.

Over the last three years, Limited Edition Cycling have raised £1,800 through our London Youth Games participation. We believe that a charity of the year rather than fundraising once a yearwill boost this total and acts as a great development opportunity for our kids to come together and achieve a worthy goal to benefit many families.
